Japanese Car Icons: The Honda CR-V

You may not think of the CR-V as a Japanese car icon, but when it was introduced in Japan back in 1995, it was a pioneer of the compact SUV segment.

Few cars combine everything you’re looking for into one package, but the Honda CR-V has always been one such car. As a family-friendly small SUV with appealing features at an affordable price, it can be summed up in two words: versatile and varied.

Read on to learn more about what characterizes the Honda CR-V and what makes it stand out.

History of the Honda CR-V

The car was first introduced in Japan in 1995 as Honda’s first in-house designed SUV. In fact, it can probably lay claim to being one of the first compact SUVs – a leader in a segment that seems to be ubiquitous in many markets.

Hiroyuki Kawase designed the first model of this car, which Honda began manufacturing in 1997. Since then, several theories have come about to explain what the “CR-V” stands for. “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle” is what you see in early promotional materials, but also “Compact Recreational Vehicle”, and “Civic Recreational Vehicle” have all been suggested. Whatever its official title, the Honda CR-V is currently on its fourth generation, with a new model released each year and major changes made every several years.

The first generation of Honda CR-Vs featured two types of trim levels: LX and EX, with the major difference being that the EX trim offered anti-lock brakes and larger wheels while LX did not. Furthermore, the design included rear seats that could be folded down and a picnic table that was stowed in the rear floor area. The Honda CR-V received a facelift between 1999 and 2001, which boosted the engine’s power and introduced new safety features such as an improved front bumper.

The second generation CR-V was fully redesigned from the first, and based its model off of the seventh generation Honda Civic. A new engine and chassis formed the bulk of the changes from the first generation, as well as an overall more streamlined appearance. As a result, Car and Driver magazine named the second generation Honda CR-V the Best Small SUV for 2002 and 2003. A 2005 facelift changed the appearance of the grille and added enlarged wheels, and introduced XM Satellite Radio to the interior of the car.

The third generation CR-V, launched in 2006, was designed to be lower, wider, and shorter than the previous CR-V models. To make this happen, this generation stowed the spare tire inside instead of attaching it to the back, decreasing the overall length of the vehicle. A newer, five-speed automatic transmission was introduced and mandatory transmission was completely phased out in order to implement a better MPG rating and smoother shifting. Internal features of the third generation CR-V included integrated navigation, voice activated control, a six-disc CD player, a rear backup camera, and an iPod dock. As a result, the Honda CR-V became one of the ten best selling vehicles of 2007. Style, powertrain, and equipment changes were introduced in 2009 for the 2010 model year as well.

The fourth and current generation was introduced at the Orange County International Auto Show and the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2011, and went on sale later that year. The new redesign features devices such as continuously variable transmission (CVT), suspension shock absorbers, springs, anti-roll bars and lower control arms to improve smoothness and decrease the chances of having an accident while driving. During Super Bowl XLVI, Honda promoted the new CR-V with an endorsement from actor Matthew Broderick of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off fame.

Features of the Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is known for having the following features and benefits:

1. Size

As a “compact SUV”, the CR-V is both large enough to meet the needs of a family and small enough to be driven and parked comfortably. The car can seat up to five people and thus works whether your family includes one, two, three or more other people; it also has plenty of storage space to fit in everyone’s belongings. At the same time, you’ll never have trouble fitting into a parking space or feel like the vehicle is too cumbersome.

2. Price

The CR-V is reasonably priced and as a compact SUV you will find you get more car for your money (as well as 4WD safety) for the kind of money you used to have to pay for a family sedan.

Where Honda has been overtaken in the compact SUV segment is in the areas of style and exclusivity. Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque and Porsche’s Macan easily beat the bland CR-V in this department, illustrating a problem bedeviling many Japanese manufacturers – how to translate underlying quality into the surface style and panache that commands premium prices.

Let’s take a look at one of those early first generation RD1-type CR-Vs and see what you can get for your money at auction in Japan.

This one has only 61,654 KM on the clock, even though was first put on the road in 1997. Let’s have a look at the translation of the auction inspection report:

“Grade 4, interior grade C, first registered 1997 (month not stated), two litre engine, four-wheel-drive, AT, AAC, original alloy wheels, power steering, power windows, interior grime and yellowing, scratches and dents, marks as per map”

As you can see, this CR-V may be almost 20 years old, but it is in remarkably good condition. (Although this kind of condition and mileage even lower than this is not at all uncommon among cars that are being auctioned in Japan.) Subaru XV Design Concept Debuted at 2016 Geneva Show

Whether it’s speed or performance boundaries that you’re looking to see redefined or it’s innovative technology and luxury that you’re looking to get your fill on, the Geneva Motor Show is where you’ll find all of the above in one exciting place. This is where leaders of the car industry come to show off their latest and greatest concepts in automobiles and every big car company highlights this week on the calendar as the time to present the most advanced vehicles to the world. Among the featured cars for this year’s March Madness, Subaru had a little something to earn bragging rights.

For those who don’t remember, Subaru debuted a couple of Impreza concepts at the Tokyo, and Los Angeles car shows last year. The first car was one was a five-door hatch, and the second car was a sedan. However, the Impreza collection also includes the elevated Crosstrek, known as the XV in most other markets. So now at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Subaru presents the first certified preview at the high-riding, next-generation Impreza, by way of this XV Concept.

While the specifics were few, what you see is what you get here. The XV certainly has a more powerful take on the sedan and hatchback models that came before it, in keeping with the Crosstrek’s character. The new concept rides on 19-inch wheels which definitely won’t make it to production, and you can anticipate some sort of boxer four-cylinder engine to drive power to all four wheels.

All in all, the XV Concept does look pretty decent. However, Subaru has a very long history of making eye-catching concept cars that don’t exactly carry their attractiveness over to production. Nonetheless, the existing Crosstrek has a bit of a rugged handsomeness to it, so let’s hope something parallel occurs when this concept ultimately transforms into a production model in the upcoming year.


Production Toyota C-HR At The Geneva Show

After being on a grand tour for the past two years and then being debuted as a design study at the Paris auto show in the fall of 2014 the Toyota’s C-HR concept has remained prominent on the continent and even managed to make its grand entrance at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show showing off its impressive body to the viewers. Just a month later, this innovative and expectantly trendy C-HR model popped up at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show wearing a Scion badge and a vivid coat of red paint. It was at the Los Angeles show that it was revealed that this brilliant C-HR was a go. Unlike Scion itself, which is now dead. Now the production version has been debuted 2016 Geneva auto show, and it looks impressive.

Personally, I dislike the styling of this car’s direct competitor, the Nissan Juke, but this Toyota C-HR blows it away. I know which one I would pick from looks alone.

It is quite evident that Toyota chose not to stray too far away from their original concept, and will probably impress the masses when they see how they added the low-profile/floating roof to the transition of this production vehicle. Certainly, the entire C-HR is only somewhat different from its original concept form, with very minor variations to the headlamps and the lower front end connecting the smaller wheels as the most noticeable changes.

According to Toyota’, their Toyota new global architecture (TNGA) which is also found under the newest Prius, it appears that the C-HR, which will have a full hybrid powertrain along with one or more gas-only alternatives.

The Toyota C-HR was scheduled to be sold in the United States as Scion, but those plans were crushed in early February 2016 when Toyota broadcasted that it would be closing its youth-oriented division. Despite the fact that the announcement wasn’t very surprising, ironically the C-HR’s crossover standing and hybrid powertrain might have certainly helped Scion in crucial market areas where it lacked any product. Now that it is coined a Toyota, the C-HR will be competing with well-known models like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Nissan Juke vehicles that made their mark on the subcompact crossover division while the new C-HR was still on tour around the globe in concept form.

It is anticipated that the C-HR will go on sale later this year, shortly after which I expect we will be seeing them pop up in the car auctions over here in Japan.


Mazda’s i-Active AWD System Beats Subaru and Honda

Mazda has made some pretty big claims about their i-Active AWD system. They claim that their all-wheel-drive system is better than both Honda’s and Subaru’s. Pretty ballsy, right?

To prove his claim, Mazda got a test facility ready, complete with snow from a recent Colorado blizzard. Dave Coleman is a development engineer for Mazda USA and he has this to say about the system.

“The goal for Mazda i-Active AWD system is to preserve the precise, intuitive feeling you expect from Mazda, even on low grip surfaces.”

He goes on to claim that the system should function “seamlessly, with no input from the driver.” Furthermore, the driver should not experience any impact on fuel economy. Really? More wheels driven, more friction in the system and surely worse economy. After all, you cannot change the laws of physics, Jim.

Coleman says that the system is more predictive rather than reactive. He says that the goal of the system is to eliminate some of the traditional disadvantages of an on-demand all-wheel-drive system. The system tries to predict and anticipate slippage and activate the system before it happens.

The carmaker is going head-to-head with its CX-5 against a Subaru Forrester and a Honda CR-V – all three of them sitting in the same weight class. Mazda is quite confident that their all-wheel-drive system will significantly outperform both Honda and Subaru.

Although it is a specially prepared test facility, it is being run on genuine snow – something that can’t be rigged. The real deal, just as nature serves it up every year.

Mazda’s i-Active system works with hundreds of pieces of information coming in from hundreds of sensors mounted all over the vehicle. This is what helps the system be more predictive instead of reactive. The vehicle’s electronic system is an information powerhouse that the vehicle relies on to activate the all-wheel-drive system.

“Think about it: your vehicle reads the outside temperature, and knows that your windscreen wipers are on and how fast they are traveling, it can read incline, steering effort versus angle, individual wheel speed, accelerator pedal position, brake fluid pressure and steering angle.”

Well, it’s doing more than just reading information. It’s processing the information at lightning speed. For instance, if the outside temperature is reading -10°, the vehicle automatically expects that there will be ice on the road that creates a slippery surface.

The Mazda system has an active torque coupling that is electronically activated, it permitting it to respond instantly at any speed.

Mazda set this up because both Mazda and Subaru both agree that the reason buyers pay extra for the all-wheel-drive feature is for safety and security. But Mazda is out to prove that buyers don’t have to choose between and all-wheel-drive and fuel economy or price. Everything is minimized – from the weight of the vehicle to friction losses. Mazda confidently says that they have the lightest AWD system on the market.

So, light weight and instant on-demand grip. That’s really what these Boulevard SUVs really need — not a rugged full-time system fit for crossing the Sahara. So perhaps Mazda really has hit the sweet spot here.


Toyota C-HR Racing Crossover To Debut in Nürburgring 24 Hour Test

Toyota is entering their racing crossover into the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance test this May. It looks like this isn’t the only car that Toyota is entering into the contest this year, pitting it against two other vehicles from their Lexus line; the Lexus RC and the Lexus RC F.

The endurance race takes places May 26 through May 29 at the infamous Nürburgring track in Germany.

The C-HR racing crossover isn’t in production yet. It’s getting there, and it has certainly made progress since being introduced as a concept in the 2014 Paris Motor Show in France.

Lexus RC will make its second appearance this year and entry in Nürburgring. It will be entering the race under the TOM’s banner.

Akio Toyoda remembers back in 2007 when Gazoo Racing first entered the infamous race and having fond memories of the event. His take on the event long since passed is how the very characteristics of the circuit tend to change with varying weather patterns.

Nürburgring’s Course Is Not for The Fainthearted

The Nürburgring is a harsh, unforgiving circuit that serves to amp up the intensity of the race. However, the participants in the race enjoy the track for that very reason. It makes them better drivers. For Toyoda, this event is the pinnacle and at the very heart of what he calls motorsport. He’s been attending the event for over nine years straight.

Toyota as a company is not too keen about sharing vehicle specs before the vehicle is released, and this vehicle is no exception. The specs remain unknown, but not for long. The car is set to be revealed and ready for production at the Geneva Motor Show. It vehicle said to be similar in size to the Nissan Juke. The show takes place in March of this year, so it doesn’t look like we’ll be waiting too long before we can get our hands on this car.

The Auris Cross

Autocar reports that the name *might* be “Auris Cross”. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the vehicle was called “courageous” and already made quite an impact. The endurance race entry is a move to not only show off the car but to send a message: this baby is ready for production.


The 2016 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD

Mazda has succeeded, once again, in making a beautiful small crossover, this one with an extra splash of luxury. Even the interior has this premium feel to it – which is saying something about Mazda: In the past, they’ve been accused of using cheap materials to decorate their interiors.

The top-of-the-line Grand Touring featured cream colored leather seats with black suede inserts balanced with red piping. Utilizing a seven-speaker audio system from Bose certainly helped their case. You can instantly tell that Mazda put a lot of thought into their interior. It was crisp and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

The Powertrain and Engine

Mazda did a lot more work than sprucing up their interior. All of the CX-three models will feature their direct-injection, 146-horsepower, 2 L, four-cylinder engine. For a crossover, it has competitive fuel economy, excellent acceleration and handles like a high-end luxury vehicle. It’s more agile than it appears. All in all, the small vehicle was a pleasure to drive. It even features of all-wheel-drive that keeps the wheels from spinning during early acceleration out of turns – a necessary element in snowy weather.

It was maneuverable and easy to park in tight spaces. However, on wider roads and at higher speeds, the vehicle tended not to be as stable as some of the larger, full-size SUVs that are hitting the markets in 2016.

A Few Small Drawbacks

Despite how beautiful the interior is, it does feel a little bit cramped. However, that is to be expected simply because it is a smaller crossover vehicle. If you push back the front seats to make room for taller passengers, there is next to nothing in terms of rear leg room. It was a pleasant surprise to note that the rear seats folded – which can offer substantially more space when the need arises.

I expect nothing less than an excellent audio system from Bose – and they deliver. The audio output is crisp and clear.

For a vehicle priced under $30,000, you get a lot of car and you get a lot of features. The inside is luxurious and handles like a champ within the city. It may be enough for Mazda to swipe a few new car buyers from more traditional premium brands. BMW X3 watch out!


Toyota is World’s Most Valuable Auto Brand in 2015

Every year, Brandz publishes their Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study. This year, Japanese automaker Toyota remains king of the hill as the undisputed most valuable automotive brand. According to the report, Toyota boasts a brand value of $28.9 billion, which puts them at the 30th most valuable brand overall.

The news honestly doesn’t come as too much of a surprise for Toyota. Just earlier this month, they published their May sales reports, which specifically highlighted the success of their light trucks. The press release stated, “Strong May results boosted the industry to the best sales pace since last summer. Toyota Division light trucks reported a best ever May, helping Toyota to over 200,000 units for the month.”

The sales report goes on to specify that May sales are up 13.4% for light trucks, which is a May record. Narrowing down even further, they say that Tacoma and Tundra pickup sales exceeded 29,000 units, which is a 15.4% increase over the year before. The Highlander managed to do even better, with an enormous 25.2% sales growth compared to the previous year… Probably due to the significant decrease in gas prices.

Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, is also doing exceptionally well this time of year, particularly their new utility vehicles. Lexus’ VP and general manager report that demand for Lexus’ premium utility vehicles has grown to 48% of total sales volume, up from 43% during the same time last year. He attributes the growth to “the momentum provided by […] growing consumer awareness of our newer models, such as the NX crossover and RC coupe.”

Going back to the Brandz Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 2015 report, it appears that the automotive industry is ruled by three powerhouses. Toyota sits at the top with a $28.9 billion valuation, BMW is number two at $26.3 billion, and Mercedes-Benz pulls up third with an estimated value of $21.7 billion. Then, there is a significant jump down to spot number four which is held by the $13.3 billion Honda. Ford ekes in at fifth with $13.1 billion, Nissan takes sixth with $11.4 billion, then Audi at $10.1 billion (a 41% increase from last year!), VW at $9.2 billion, Land Rover at $4.9 billion and Lexus at $4.3 billion.

Yes, that means that Toyota is the number one automotive brand WITHOUT counting the value of their luxury arm.

Even though the automotive industry’s value grew 3% as a whole from 2014 to 2015, that’s a significant decrease from the 17% value increase that took place from 2013 to 2014. The Brandz study noted that carmakers in 2015 and onward “face a paradoxical dilemma: their product quality is better than ever, but their brands are increasingly difficult to differentiate.” With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Toyota sits on top since they have arguably the most consumer trust… As long as the biggest perceived difference between automakers is reliability, not features, then there’s no doubt Toyota will remain on top.


2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Facelift Leaked

This just in: Toyota’s flagship SUV, the 200 Series Land Cruiser, looks like it’s getting a major overhaul next year. The news comes from a set of the leaked images that originated from a Japanese automotive magazine. Along with the images came the photo you see at the top of this post, which depicts the allegedly next-generation Land Cruiser.

That being said, this main image appears to be a semi-digitized rendering. Those with a keen eye for Photoshop will notice that the depth of field right on the corner where the right-side headlamp wraps above the wheel is a little too two-dimensional. In fact, most of the grille and bumper looks tampered with, and those alloys definitely look copy+pasted into place. So we’re skeptical that this is an actual product photo leak for the next-gen Land Cruiser.

But, even if the image at the top of this post is more rendering than spy shot, the other photos seen here, which were posted by a Twitter user with handle @Hamad1two, appear to be real. In the other photos, we see what looks like a dealership training manual highlighting the differences between the current Land Cruiser and the upcoming model.

Thus, from these images, we can see that even if the primary photo shown at the top of this post is a rendering, it at least portrays the gist of the upgrade.

The biggest update to the Land Cruiser’s design seems to be the front-end, which appears to get a completely overhauled design. It looks like the SUV will get a set of new dual-projector lights and restyled LED DRL’s, plus a new grille design and similarly restyled taillights and bumper in the back. It also looks like the crossover will be getting some new treads too, although they may not be quite like what we see in the image above.

Inside, these spy shots depict a revised interior trim, with new chrome accents and an updated instrument cluster. It also looks like they’ve added in some new entertainment options via rear-seat TV screens.

Finally, if you could read Japanese, you’d see that these leaks claim that the new Land Cruiser will run on a 2.7 L turbo diesel with 174 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. That would mean that SUV would probably get the same engine recently revealed for the new Toyota HiLux.

Either way, we will likely see the facelifted Land Cruiser before the end of 2015, so stay tuned for the next round of auto shows this fall for more details.


Japanese Car Auction Find – 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser

A few days ago we got our first peek at what the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser may end up looking like. After reading some of the feedback from our own readers and others around the web, it turns out that not many folks like the new look that they’re seeing in the facelifted Land Cruiser. Personally, we’d be more excited if Toyota gave some love to their retro off-roader, the FJ Cruiser. Here’s a 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser for reference:

The current FJ Cruiser has been on the market for almost 10 years now with only one minor update for the 2011 model year. But, it still stands out as one of the most eye-catching cars on the road (and off the road, as the case may be). It would make perfect sense for Toyota to upgrade the FJ Cruiser, since they just recently came out with a new version of their Hilux pickup, whose platform the FJ Cruiser is built on.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is rugged and retro, and this 2013 model year is no exception. You can see that this car looks to have received some aftermarket treatment… The tires are Mud Grippers Extreme Terrain truck tires, and the grille and rear tire cover both look to have received some extra chrome. Beyond that, you’ll have to get more details via the auction sheet translation at the bottom of this post.

Under the hood, this Toyota FJ Cruiser runs on a 4.0L V6 engine paired up with a six speed automatic transmission and AWD. The engine outputs 260 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. The car boasts almost 10 inches of ground clearance, which is enough to make it a true off-road vehicle. For those of you familiar with off-road lingo, you can get a steep 34-degree approach and 30-degree departure with that ground clearance, and the SUV is capable of driving in up to 28 inches of water and can tow a full 5,000 lbs.

Inside, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a tad sparse (you could call it utilitarian), but it still keeps the same retro styling as the exterior. The quirky colorful nature of the FJ Cruiser is maintained in the cabin with color inserts such as the bright orange one you can see in the image above.

2016 Toyota HiLux is Better in Every Way

After a whole bunch of spyshots and some very revealing unofficial spoilers (plus an accident involving a trailer carrying two brand-new 2016 models for debut), Toyota has finally unveiled the official all-new 2016 Toyota HiLux – the eight-generation model for the 47 year-old pickup.

If you’re reading this in the US, chances are that you’ve never heard of the Toyota HiLux pickup truck… That’s because it’s not sold in the States. But, it’s one of Toyota’s most well-known and beloved models in other markets, like Australia and Thailand.

The old Toyota HiLux has been on the market in its current form for at least a decade. The new model is better in literally every way. It’s bigger, it looks better, it’s more fun to drive, it can hold and tow a lot more weight, it’s more efficient, it’s got a larger cabin and it even holds more gas with a massive 80L fuel tank.

Under the hood, Toyota says that they’ve expanded the model’s “legendary prowess” with a substantially stronger frame, two new high-torque turbocharged diesel engines (expanding the powertrain options to four) and improved body rigidity for better on-Road toughness and improved steering response. Toyota has used high-tensile steel to keep the truck agile without sacrificing strength and toughness.

As for those two new engines, Toyota says that the turbo-diesels are “notable for their low-end punch and develop substantially more torque than the current model’s 3.0L unit”. This is especially impressive since both new engines are of a smaller displacement than the outgoing model. One is a 2.4L outputting 400 Nm, the other is a 2.8L outputting 450 Nm of torque, while both plants have about 10% improved fuel economy. Depending on which engine and trim you go with, Toyota says the new HiLux’s towing capacity has increased up to 3.5 tonnes (~7,700 lbs) and 1,240 kg (~2,700 lbs).
