Hybrid Cars At Auction In Japan

Until recently, “hybrid” was tightly associated with Japanese cars. By February 2018, Toyota’s hybrid sales alone had passed 11 million vehicles. Now most manufacturers offer a hybrid drivetrain option, but how do you find these in Japan's car auctions?

How can you find hybrid cars in Japan’s car auctions?

If you are interested in getting a hybrid car of any description, Japan’s car auctions are a great place to start.

After all, Japan is the home of the hybrid with Toyota first popularizing the hybrid power train with the original Prius back in 1997. Unsurprisingly, Japan's car auctions have a huge selection of vehicles available every day, many of which are hybrids.

So the question is how can you find these hybrid cars in the Japanese car auctions?

The most efficient way is by chassis type. The chassis type is the combination of letters and numbers at the the beginning of the chassis number (VIN number).

Let's think 2008 Toyota Prius as an example. The chassis type is NHW20, and its full chassis number (VIN) is NHW20-7837381. The chassis type NHW20 at the head of the chassis number identifies this car as a second-generation Toyota Prius.

How to use chassis codes to find hybrid cars in the auctions
