Toyota News: LC 500 Name Trademarked, Increased Mirai Production

Posted by Stephen On Wednesday, December 10th, 2014

Things are happening at Toyota this week… Big things! Chief among them are two breaking news stories:

First, last week we learned that Toyota already had an astounding 200 pre-orders for their Mirai fuel-cell sedan, and this week we’ve learned that Toyota is devoting an extra $165 million to the car’s initial production.

Second, the avid users over at Lexus Enthusiast – a popular Lexus-themed blog and forum – also found out this week that the premium Japanese automaker has filed trademarks for the Lexus LC 500 and LC 500h nameplate in several countries.

You can read more about both stories below:

Increased Toyota Mirai Production

2014 Lexus LF-LC Concept

The word from a popular Japanese newspaper, Nikkei, has informed us that Toyota plans to invest something in the ballpark of ¥20 billion – about $165 million – to more than triple domestic production. Toyota will reportedly deliver 700 Mirais (instead of just 200) by the end of 2015. Apparently, demand is so strong that even with this increased production capacity, Toyota still won’t be able to meet production demands.

As a reminder, the all-new Toyota Mirai goes on sale in Japan next Monday, December 15. Then, it’ll go on sale in the US and Europe in the summer of next year.

Along with the news of increased production, Nikkei also gave us an updated breakdown of exactly how many Toyota Mirai FCVs the Japanese automaker intends to sell in its first three years on the market. They want to sell:

  • 400 units in the Japan by the end of 2015
  • 50 – 100 units per year in Europe by the end of 2016
  • 3,000 units per year in the US by the end of 2017

Remember the Lexus LF-C2 Concept from last month’s LA auto show? So do we – it’s a hard car to forget. Thanks to the investigative users at the popular Lexus blog, Lexus Enthusiast, we’ve learned that the premium automaker has filed trademarks for both LC 500 and LC 500h in the US, Canada and Australia.

This means that the Lexus LF-LC and the LF-C2 Concepts were never meant to herald new RC F models or revived SC coupe models… Instead, it looks like the Lexus LC 500 and 500h will mark the beginning of a totally new nameplate for Toyota’s sub-brand. Furthermore, we can now assume that the Lexus LF-LC and LF-C2 production models will be the “exciting new cars” we were told to expect at next year’s Detroit Auto Show, and that they’ll run on the Lexus RC F’s 467hp 5.0L V8 engine.

Lexus GS 450h F Sport & Possible Lexus GS F Coming Soon

Posted by Stephen On Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

Today we have two sizable pieces of Lexus news to cover. One of them is official while the other is a little less guaranteed. We have a lot to get through, so we won’t waste too much time on an introduction.

Lexus GS 450h F Sport Coming in 2015

2014 Lexus GS 450h

2014 Lexus GS 450h

The Lexus GS 450h has always been marketed as one of the few truly high-performance hybrids. With 338hp and a 0 to 60 time of just a hair over 5 seconds, it’s fair to say that the GS 450h already delivers on the performance front. Now, Lexus wants to improve the hybrid sedan’s upmarket appeal with the addition of 18-inch split five-spoke alloys as standard.

However, that’s just the beginning. Lexus will also introduce an F Sport package for the hybrid sports car.

The Lexus GS 450h F Sport will get upgraded 19-inch staggered-width alloys, a refined mesh grille, a rear lip spoiler and a new rear lower valance. Inside, the F Sport increases premium appeal with perforated leather trim and innovative 16-way adjustable sport seating with subtle aluminum trim along the pedals and door.

Under the hood, the Lexus GS 450h F Sport will get improved Adaptive Variable Suspension with larger front brakes and high-friction brake pads which, when combined with the Sport S+ Mode, allow for sharper, more agile driving.

Lexus GS F Coming in 2016

2015 Lexus RC F Coupe

You’ve probably already heard about the new Lexus RC F coupe (above) which will arrive later this year at a dealership near you. When it does, it’ll join the Lexus IS F and the Lexus LFA as the only Lexus models under the F marque. However, a recent report from suggests that a fourth vehicle will soon join the lineup.

That car will be the Lexus GS F.

Early reports suggest that the new Lexus GS F would ride on a slightly modified version of the RC F’s chassis. It’ll also likely share the coupe’s 5.0L V8 engine and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, paired up with a Torsen differential to deliver power to the wheels. However, Autocar suspects that the engine will be tuned even more powerfully than the RC F, perhaps generating as much as 500bhp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Taken together, all this equates to a 0 to 60 time around 4.5 seconds and a top speed over 170mph.

Unfortunately, all of this information is taken from an unnamed source, so it’s up to you how seriously you take this particular bit of news. Either way, there’s no denying that a Lexus GS F would be a great addition to the lineup, so we’ll optimistically hope that a production model confirms this rumor at an upcoming auto show.
