Mazda’s i-Active AWD System Beats Subaru and Honda

Mazda has made some pretty big claims about their i-Active AWD system. They claim that their all-wheel-drive system is better than both Honda’s and Subaru’s. Pretty ballsy, right?

To prove his claim, Mazda got a test facility ready, complete with snow from a recent Colorado blizzard. Dave Coleman is a development engineer for Mazda USA and he has this to say about the system.

“The goal for Mazda i-Active AWD system is to preserve the precise, intuitive feeling you expect from Mazda, even on low grip surfaces.”

He goes on to claim that the system should function “seamlessly, with no input from the driver.” Furthermore, the driver should not experience any impact on fuel economy. Really? More wheels driven, more friction in the system and surely worse economy. After all, you cannot change the laws of physics, Jim.

Coleman says that the system is more predictive rather than reactive. He says that the goal of the system is to eliminate some of the traditional disadvantages of an on-demand all-wheel-drive system. The system tries to predict and anticipate slippage and activate the system before it happens.

The carmaker is going head-to-head with its CX-5 against a Subaru Forrester and a Honda CR-V – all three of them sitting in the same weight class. Mazda is quite confident that their all-wheel-drive system will significantly outperform both Honda and Subaru.

Although it is a specially prepared test facility, it is being run on genuine snow – something that can’t be rigged. The real deal, just as nature serves it up every year.

Mazda’s i-Active system works with hundreds of pieces of information coming in from hundreds of sensors mounted all over the vehicle. This is what helps the system be more predictive instead of reactive. The vehicle’s electronic system is an information powerhouse that the vehicle relies on to activate the all-wheel-drive system.

“Think about it: your vehicle reads the outside temperature, and knows that your windscreen wipers are on and how fast they are traveling, it can read incline, steering effort versus angle, individual wheel speed, accelerator pedal position, brake fluid pressure and steering angle.”

Well, it’s doing more than just reading information. It’s processing the information at lightning speed. For instance, if the outside temperature is reading -10°, the vehicle automatically expects that there will be ice on the road that creates a slippery surface.

The Mazda system has an active torque coupling that is electronically activated, it permitting it to respond instantly at any speed.

Mazda set this up because both Mazda and Subaru both agree that the reason buyers pay extra for the all-wheel-drive feature is for safety and security. But Mazda is out to prove that buyers don’t have to choose between and all-wheel-drive and fuel economy or price. Everything is minimized – from the weight of the vehicle to friction losses. Mazda confidently says that they have the lightest AWD system on the market.

So, light weight and instant on-demand grip. That’s really what these Boulevard SUVs really need — not a rugged full-time system fit for crossing the Sahara. So perhaps Mazda really has hit the sweet spot here.

Mazda has succeeded, once again, in making a beautiful small crossover, this one with an extra splash of luxury. Even the interior has this premium feel to it – which is saying something about Mazda: In the past, they’ve been accused of using cheap materials to decorate their interiors.

The top-of-the-line Grand Touring featured cream colored leather seats with black suede inserts balanced with red piping. Utilizing a seven-speaker audio system from Bose certainly helped their case. You can instantly tell that Mazda put a lot of thought into their interior. It was crisp and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

The Powertrain and Engine

Mazda did a lot more work than sprucing up their interior. All of the CX-three models will feature their direct-injection, 146-horsepower, 2 L, four-cylinder engine. For a crossover, it has competitive fuel economy, excellent acceleration and handles like a high-end luxury vehicle. It’s more agile than it appears. All in all, the small vehicle was a pleasure to drive. It even features of all-wheel-drive that keeps the wheels from spinning during early acceleration out of turns – a necessary element in snowy weather.

It was maneuverable and easy to park in tight spaces. However, on wider roads and at higher speeds, the vehicle tended not to be as stable as some of the larger, full-size SUVs that are hitting the markets in 2016.

A Few Small Drawbacks

Despite how beautiful the interior is, it does feel a little bit cramped. However, that is to be expected simply because it is a smaller crossover vehicle. If you push back the front seats to make room for taller passengers, there is next to nothing in terms of rear leg room. It was a pleasant surprise to note that the rear seats folded – which can offer substantially more space when the need arises.

I expect nothing less than an excellent audio system from Bose – and they deliver. The audio output is crisp and clear.

For a vehicle priced under $30,000, you get a lot of car and you get a lot of features. The inside is luxurious and handles like a champ within the city. It may be enough for Mazda to swipe a few new car buyers from more traditional premium brands. BMW X3 watch out!


2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Facelift Leaked

This just in: Toyota’s flagship SUV, the 200 Series Land Cruiser, looks like it’s getting a major overhaul next year. The news comes from a set of the leaked images that originated from a Japanese automotive magazine. Along with the images came the photo you see at the top of this post, which depicts the allegedly next-generation Land Cruiser.

That being said, this main image appears to be a semi-digitized rendering. Those with a keen eye for Photoshop will notice that the depth of field right on the corner where the right-side headlamp wraps above the wheel is a little too two-dimensional. In fact, most of the grille and bumper looks tampered with, and those alloys definitely look copy+pasted into place. So we’re skeptical that this is an actual product photo leak for the next-gen Land Cruiser.

But, even if the image at the top of this post is more rendering than spy shot, the other photos seen here, which were posted by a Twitter user with handle @Hamad1two, appear to be real. In the other photos, we see what looks like a dealership training manual highlighting the differences between the current Land Cruiser and the upcoming model.

Thus, from these images, we can see that even if the primary photo shown at the top of this post is a rendering, it at least portrays the gist of the upgrade.

The biggest update to the Land Cruiser’s design seems to be the front-end, which appears to get a completely overhauled design. It looks like the SUV will get a set of new dual-projector lights and restyled LED DRL’s, plus a new grille design and similarly restyled taillights and bumper in the back. It also looks like the crossover will be getting some new treads too, although they may not be quite like what we see in the image above.

Inside, these spy shots depict a revised interior trim, with new chrome accents and an updated instrument cluster. It also looks like they’ve added in some new entertainment options via rear-seat TV screens.

Finally, if you could read Japanese, you’d see that these leaks claim that the new Land Cruiser will run on a 2.7 L turbo diesel with 174 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. That would mean that SUV would probably get the same engine recently revealed for the new Toyota HiLux.

Either way, we will likely see the facelifted Land Cruiser before the end of 2015, so stay tuned for the next round of auto shows this fall for more details.


Japanese Car Auction Find – 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser

A few days ago we got our first peek at what the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser may end up looking like. After reading some of the feedback from our own readers and others around the web, it turns out that not many folks like the new look that they’re seeing in the facelifted Land Cruiser. Personally, we’d be more excited if Toyota gave some love to their retro off-roader, the FJ Cruiser. Here’s a 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser for reference:

The current FJ Cruiser has been on the market for almost 10 years now with only one minor update for the 2011 model year. But, it still stands out as one of the most eye-catching cars on the road (and off the road, as the case may be). It would make perfect sense for Toyota to upgrade the FJ Cruiser, since they just recently came out with a new version of their Hilux pickup, whose platform the FJ Cruiser is built on.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is rugged and retro, and this 2013 model year is no exception. You can see that this car looks to have received some aftermarket treatment… The tires are Mud Grippers Extreme Terrain truck tires, and the grille and rear tire cover both look to have received some extra chrome. Beyond that, you’ll have to get more details via the auction sheet translation at the bottom of this post.

Under the hood, this Toyota FJ Cruiser runs on a 4.0L V6 engine paired up with a six speed automatic transmission and AWD. The engine outputs 260 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. The car boasts almost 10 inches of ground clearance, which is enough to make it a true off-road vehicle. For those of you familiar with off-road lingo, you can get a steep 34-degree approach and 30-degree departure with that ground clearance, and the SUV is capable of driving in up to 28 inches of water and can tow a full 5,000 lbs.

Inside, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a tad sparse (you could call it utilitarian), but it still keeps the same retro styling as the exterior. The quirky colorful nature of the FJ Cruiser is maintained in the cabin with color inserts such as the bright orange one you can see in the image above.

I probably don’t need to tell you that this 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Japanese car auction find is in above-average condition. It’s got an overall rating of 4.5 with a B-grade interior… So about what you’d expect from a 2013MY. For more information, keep reading below the auction sheet.

2016 Toyota HiLux is Better in Every Way

After a whole bunch of spyshots and some very revealing unofficial spoilers (plus an accident involving a trailer carrying two brand-new 2016 models for debut), Toyota has finally unveiled the official all-new 2016 Toyota HiLux – the eight-generation model for the 47 year-old pickup.

If you’re reading this in the US, chances are that you’ve never heard of the Toyota HiLux pickup truck… That’s because it’s not sold in the States. But, it’s one of Toyota’s most well-known and beloved models in other markets, like Australia and Thailand.

The old Toyota HiLux has been on the market in its current form for at least a decade. The new model is better in literally every way. It’s bigger, it looks better, it’s more fun to drive, it can hold and tow a lot more weight, it’s more efficient, it’s got a larger cabin and it even holds more gas with a massive 80L fuel tank.

Under the hood, Toyota says that they’ve expanded the model’s “legendary prowess” with a substantially stronger frame, two new high-torque turbocharged diesel engines (expanding the powertrain options to four) and improved body rigidity for better on-Road toughness and improved steering response. Toyota has used high-tensile steel to keep the truck agile without sacrificing strength and toughness.

As for those two new engines, Toyota says that the turbo-diesels are “notable for their low-end punch and develop substantially more torque than the current model’s 3.0L unit”. This is especially impressive since both new engines are of a smaller displacement than the outgoing model. One is a 2.4L outputting 400 Nm, the other is a 2.8L outputting 450 Nm of torque, while both plants have about 10% improved fuel economy. Depending on which engine and trim you go with, Toyota says the new HiLux’s towing capacity has increased up to 3.5 tonnes (~7,700 lbs) and 1,240 kg (~2,700 lbs).

Inside the cabin, Toyota’s goal was to make the new HiLux feel more like an SUV than a pickup without sacrificing the model’s rugged, simple cabin appeal. You’ll find that the larger eighth-gen model has allowed Toyota to create a much more spacious and comfortable cab, with more room for all occupants, luxury seating, and better quality materials used throughout. They’ve also updated the interior to match the conventional tech. amenities found in today’s most popular SUVs, including a crisp audio system and a massive, vibrant multi-touch control screen.

Here’s the 2015 Toyota RAV4 Rally Car

Toyota has an innovative new rally racer that they will bring to several rally competitions later this year. It’s a tuned up 2015 Toyota RAV4 LE, pictured here in full racing form.

The Japanese automaker unveiled their high-performance rally RAV4 this weekend at the Monster Energy Supercross Championship finale, which took place at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. Obviously, it’s not every day that you see a commercial crossover competing in pro-level races like the Idaho Rally or the Mt. Hood Rally. Toyota plans to bring their RAV4 to several of the races in the 2015 Rally America season in the 2WD-Open Class.

The modified 2015 Toyota RAV4 LE will be driven by Ryan Millen – a seasoned Toyota racer in his own right. He recently won the 2014 Baja 1000 driving a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro series, and he has high hopes for the RAV4. “I’ve driven just about everything Toyota has to offer,” he said. “And I’ve been very impressed with the RAV4 is tight, compact body and smooth handling. I’m looking forward to putting it through the paces this season.”

What kind of modifications has Toyota made to transform their commercial RAV4 into a rally-ready machine?

One thing they did NOT change is the engine… The RAV4 rally car runs on the same stock powertrain in the normal RAV4 LE, which is a 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine. It outputs 176 hp and just 172 lb-ft of torque, and the engine is fitted to the LE’s stock transmission. So, how will the RAV4 hope to compete?

Millen’s crew stripped over 500 lbs off the small crossover to make it a much more agile vehicle. They added a roll cage and fitted the wheels with BFGoodrich all-terrain DOT 215/75R15 tires. They also upgraded the unpderpinnings with a front and rear TEIN suspension.

You may be asking why Toyota would care about getting their RAV4 crossover into the motorsports spotlight; we certainly were. Turns out, they’ve got something to prove. The press release makes it clear they’re tired of the RAV4 being known “only” for its immense practicality and superiority to its “more-cumbersome” SUV brethren. Now, they want everyone to know that the RAV4’s “lighter and leaner design” makes it the perfect car for anyone who regularly makes “desert, beach and other outdoor excursions.”

Okay, Toyota, we get it. The RAV4 is an off-road vehicle. Let’s see what it can do.


Japanese Car Auction Find – 2006 Toyota Hilux Surf

Yesterday we got our first unofficial peak at the eighth-generation Toyota Hilux pickup truck which is set to go on sale sometime in the next few months. Although the Hilux pickup hasn’t been available in Japan for quite some time, the Hilux Surf SUV was sold there from 2002 to 2009. Today we’re looking at a 2006 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X Limited model.

Just to set the record straight, the Toyota Hilux Surf is basically the Japanese version of the Toyota 4Runner. The only difference is that the Hilux Surf has a side-opening tailgate whereas the 4Runner’s tailgate lifts up from the bottom (at least it did in this generation of production). Otherwise, both cars run on the same double wishbone front suspension and solid rear axle for extra durability. This is in stark contrast to the Toyota Highlander – a similar size crossover that isn’t really intended for off-road use. The Hilux Surf is certainly off-road friendly.

It’s also worth noting that as a Limited model, this Hilux Surf would have come with Toyota’s new suspension technology that debuted in this generation – the X-Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) – which dramatically reduces body roll during intense cornering.

Under the hood, the auction sheet shown at the bottom of this post tells us that this Hilux Surf is powered by a 2.7L engine. After digging around for some JDM manufacturer specs, we found that this particular engine offers 160 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. Not too shabby, although it should be noted that other Hilux Surf models have engines up to 4.0L in displacement if you want more ‘oomph’.

Inside, the Hilux Surf has decent cabin amenities like automatic climate control, remote keyless entry and a color DVD-based infotainment/navigation system paired up with a 10-speaker JBL sound system. However, what really sets it apart is the sheer space offered in the cabin. Looking at the pictures from the auction find, you can see the driver here has enough room to almost fully recline in the front seat! And you’ll sit extremely comfortably thanks to power driver’s lumbar support and a tilting telescopic steering wheel.

On the whole, this is a great Japanese car auction find with an overall rating of 4. The gleaming chrome alloys that you can easily make out in the pictures above are definitely our favorite part. Just like the 4Runner, the Hilux Surf is widely regarded as an easy-to-drive SUV that does exactly what it says on the box. It’s the perfect mix of reliability, comfort and utility. Nissan Rogue Hybrid Possibly Coming to the US

After Toyota showed off their new RAV4 Hybrid at the recent 2015 New York Auto Show, Nissan is chiming in with a new hybrid offer of their own. Nothing is guaranteed yet, but rumors have surfaced that Nissan is considering adding a hybrid powertrain to the second best-selling vehicle in their lineup – the Rogue compact crossover.

The news comes from an interview between the Nissan X-Trail’s chief engineer, Nobusuke Toukura, and Automotive News. For those unfamiliar with Nissan’s nomenclature, the US Rogue is sold in most international markets as the X-Trail. Nissan is getting ready to add a hybrid version of the Rogue/X-Trail to their JDM portfolio, and is mulling the possibility of bringing the same powertrain to the US.

That means that if the US does get a Nissan Rogue Hybrid, it will likely use a 30 kW one-motor hybrid system with two clutches, unlike the multi-motor hybrid systems that have been implemented by both Honda and Toyota. The Rogue’s hybrid system would be paired with a 2.0L four cylinder engine that outputs 145 horsepower, along with Nissan’s standard CVT transmission. AutoNews says that the 2.0L engine is more favorable for the hybrid setup because it offers superior with low-rev torque and acceleration compared to the larger non-hybrid 2.5L engine that’s also offered in the X-Trail.

If Nissan is indeed going to release a Rogue Hybrid, now is definitely the time to do it…

For one, a hybrid crossover would keep them aligned with new competitors entering the scene in the form of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and a possible Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid. For two, US hybrid sales are expected to surge in the next five years as emissions regulations continue to tighten up. Thirdly, the Rogue is on an upswing this year, with a 28% increase in year-over-year sales during the first three months of 2015. When you consider that Nissan estimates that a hybrid option could account for 40% of future sales, it seems like an easy decision to make.

On top of all that, the Nissan X-Trail Hybrid going on sale in Japan next month will get an impressive 48 mpg, which makes it easy to see where Nissan got their expected 40% hybrid sales distribution – who could say no to 48 mpg in a crossover? Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for official word from a Nissan USA spokesman to know whether the model is guaranteed to make an appearance on US shores… So far, still no comment.


Honda Says Bye-Bye to Crosstour for 2016

Yesterday we looked one of the most successful Honda/Acura models of the past decade up for auction in Japan. In a fitting contrast, today we learned that Honda plans to get rid of one of their worst-sellers for the 2016MY. That car is the Honda Crosstour, and it will be officially axed from the lineup for 2016.

Note, this is NOT the same car as the Honda Accord Tourer which is available in some markets.

The Honda Crosstour, previously known as the Honda Accord Crosstour, is an awkward fusion of sedan, station wagon and crossover. It’s designed to have the looks of a sedan, the space of a station wagon and the underpinnings of a crossover. It’s a little unfair, but you can see how the car earned itself the nickname “The hunchback of Honda”… People perceive the Crosstour as bulky and unattractive without any of the perks that normally come with bulky and unattractive cars.

The result of this awkwardly implemented design concept is a remarkably slow-selling model. The Honda Crosstour debuted in 2010, and its monthly sales only ever peaked at 2,900 units during that year. According to Good Car Bad Car, the Honda Crosstour has yet to sell more than 750 units in one month since the start of 2015. It’s been a full year since the car managed to consistently sell over 1,000 units a month.

According to Honda’s official statement on the Crosstour’s cessation, they believe that the Honda HR-V launching any day now is the right direction for their crossover lineup:

“The crossover segment has evolved and we believe the all-new 2016 Honda HR-V launching later this spring will create new value for crossover shoppers and play a more significant role as a gateway model for the Honda brand to drive light truck sales growth. This move will allow the East Liberty Plant to focus on meeting demand for the CR-V and a refreshed 2016 Acura RDX and, as announced last month, expand light truck production in early 2017 with the Acura MDX,”

The statement reveals another core reason behind the Crosstour’s demise, which is that it will allow them to optimize manufacturing capacity. The Crosstour is currently manufactured at Honda’s East Liberty, Ohio plant… Getting rid of the low-selling model in 2016 will allow this plant to focus solely on other crossover models like the Honda CR-V and Acura RDX.

Honestly, we don’t think that the Crosstour had to be doomed from the start. After all, the BMW X6 does just fine and it’s really not too far off from the current Crosstour.

However, the Crosstour was one of the first cars that Honda promoted primarily on social media, and they did NOT do a very good job. The photos they shared were ugly, and the original “Accord Crosstour” naming scheme was confusing. The result was a flood of negative comments and shares… Not exactly a great start. In fact, it was so bad that the Crosstour never took off, despite dealerships offering rock-bottom prices in recent years to try and clear out their stocks.

So long, Crosstour. Honestly, you won’t be missed.


Japanese Car Auction Find – 2003 Honda MDX

After being so impressed by the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander on display at the 2015 New York Auto Show, we got to thinking about other popular SUVs on the market today. That led us to the Acura MDX, sold in many international markets as the Honda MDX – it’s a car that has historically been a top contender in the three-row crossover segment. The car we’re looking at today is a 2003 Honda MDX up for auction in Japan.

While today’s Japanese car auction find may not be the most up-to-date version of the MDX, it’s still a great car with lots to offer at a great price. And honestly, it’s not even that outdated… The MDX only this past year entered its third generation, so this car would’ve been produced towards the end of the car’s first generation.

But, we’ll let the exterior design mostly speak for itself.

What has always separated the Honda MDX from other larger SUVs is the unique combination of three-row seating, decent on-road performance and surprisingly conservative fuel economy (EPA estimate 23 mpg highway / 17 mpg city). Honda actually boosted the 3.5L powertrain’s output for the 2003 model year to 265 hp up from the 240 hp offered the year before.

What allows the MDX to offer such stable and engaging driving dynamics is Honda’s automatic four-wheel drive system, codenamed VTM-4, which is also used in the Honda Pilot and Ridgeline. This AWD system allows the MDX to drive in regular FWD for normal cruising; a big part of the great gas mileage. However, the system still offers access to the rear wheels when needed. For example, you can access “lock mode” which is the equivalent of a temporarily locked rear differential – it activates the rear wheels at low speeds for maximum traction, designed to get the MDX up steep hills or out of a ditch.

The Honda MDX has always had an indulgent cabin. Even before automakers cared about interiors, the Honda MDX had an extremely quiet and spacious interior. Driver and front passenger both get plenty of legroom, as you can see in the picture above, and while some people will miss the third seat from the back row, the two passengers that CAN fit in the back will enjoy the extra elbow-room.

You can see on the auction sheet below that this MDX also offers a number of amenities inside the cabin… Automatic air conditioning, power steering and Windows, a sunroof and an LCD infotainment system are all included.
