Top Secret Rocked the Tokyo Auto Salon 2016

Posted by Stephen On Thursday, February 18th, 2016

Just when you thought “Top Secret’” was a term only used by super agents and comic book heroes, let’s look back to the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon had a booth that had a Top Secret Nissan Skyline GT-R on display in all its glory. This Bayside Blue and brilliant car was resting in the showroom of the International Convention Complex Makuhari Messe where everything comes alive! At first glance, the body of the car is what grabs a car lover’s attention, but when looking deeper into the details, you realize there is more to this beast than meets the eye.

The owner, Kenneth Blanck, has had this work of art since March of 2011 when he purchased it from Global Auto who is a renowned dealer in these custom vehicles. Back then, the GT-R was only a dream to Blanck, who had coveted it he was a drag racing teenager. It was fast on its wheels, and Kenneth saw it as the perfect car to take on as a project. He was determined to make this his baby and as soon as he was financially able to, he invested in this Top Secret Nissan Skyline GT-R. “I loved the R34 shape as it was featured in the Fast and Furious movie series.”

Top Secret R34 Tokyo Auto Salon 2016

Kenneth did this model justice by transforming it into one of the freshest and most refined R34 Skylines ever seen before, while avoiding flashy car bling and drag racing stripes. Besides the aesthetics on this Top Secret GT-R, the most notable component is the impressive uprated turbo engine. Blanck’s R34 Skyline is the very first to run a Borg Warner EFR-9180 turbo engine in Japan. His model also had customized dual wastegate dump pipes added to the side skirt on the passenger side in addition to titanium 80mm exhaust on the same side. Just the sound is enough for a car fanatic!

The car in its entirety is quite the showstopper, as was evident to all who passed by its booth at the Tokyo Auto Salon. But it’s not just a looker. Kenneth also mentioned that he has pushed the car on the Fuji Speedway and has seen 217mph on the race track.

I wonder what will be enticing visitors to the 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon? More power. More bling. More incredible machines.

What is Mazda Planning to Reveal at the Tokyo Auto Salon?

Posted by Stephen On Tuesday, January 12th, 2016

he Tokyo Auto Salon, arguably one of Japan’s largest annual auto shows featuring custom cars and technology, is only a few days away. It takes place every year in January and features some of the most highly anticipated reveals in the industry.

mazda-tokyo-auto-salon

This year, it’s being held at the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex in Chiba, Japan. It’s poised to open its doors Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.
This year, it is anticipated that Mazda will be unveiling a surprise – there has been a lot of talk about the possibility of a new generation of MazdaSpeed!

Among car enthusiasts, the rumors have been that Mazda has been developing the new vehicle for quite some time, with plans to reveal it at the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon. Even if it’s just a concept car this revealed, it is an event that we have been waiting for ever so patiently.

Right now, it’s only a rumor. However, if the rumors are correct, then we’re in for a big treat at this year’s car show. The MazdaSpeed offers greater speed and performance over other Mazda vehicles and the trim has been a favorite among car enthusiasts for a long time.

The Tokyo Auto Salon has been the platform of choice for almost 30 years by the world’s most creative automakers to get together and reveal the futuristic concept cars of tomorrow. It’s always a refreshing experience to find out what the auto industry plans on bringing us in the future.

The MazdaSpeed is a compact, hatchback sports car that, while not too expensive, is always on the shopping list of custom car builders. The aftermarket for the MazdaSpeed is huge, and barely beginning to get tapped.

The power comes from a 2.5 L, four-cylinder engine. The peak outcome is over 300 hp – not something to take lightly

If the Japanese automaker is on track, they should have two new rotary-powered sports cars out by 2020: a new RX-9 (?) flagship and RX-7 successor, also in the works.
The only thing we can do is wait until Tokyo Auto Salon opens the doors Friday to find out what Mazda has been hiding underneath the hood.

3 Cars You Can’t Miss From the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon

Posted by Stephen On Saturday, January 17th, 2015

While the Detroit Motor Show rages on in the US (we’ll be back next week with more coverage), the Tokyo Auto Salon is quickly drawing to a close, and we haven’t yet had an opportunity to share our favorite finds from the show. Yesterday we showcased some really neat aftermarket concepts from Subaru, but there’s oh so much more to see.

As you continue reading, you’ll get a look at three of our favorite Japanese cars from this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon.

Honda Vezel Mugen Concept

Honda Vezel Mugen Concept

This Vezel-based concept is a semi-quirky racer customized by M-TEC (aka. Mugen) in celebration of their performance in the SUPER GT 300 class in the last Super Formula series. It’s a conventional JDM Vezel fit with Mugen parts, including an off-the-wall bodykit, upgraded brakes and suspension, sleek 20-inch alloys and a sporty interior.

Toyota Mark X GRMN

Toyota Mark X GRMN Concept

What we have here is a conventional Toyota Mark X that’s been modified by Toyota-affiliated racing firm GAZOO Racing, known by the acronym GRMN. The firm made a number of aesthetic improvements, including a subtle body kit with a rear spoiler and 19-inch alloys, a revised interior with sport seats and steering wheel, plus plenty of carbon fiber trim. But the truly noteworthy improvement here is the new powertrain, which GRMN borrowed from the current Lexus IS 350. So, you get a 3.5L V6 paired with a 6-speed manual, which delivers a full 316hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.

Only 100 units of the Toyota Mark X GRMN will be sold, and they’ll start at about $45,000.

Toyota GT86 GRMN Concept

Toyota brought a total of 34 concepts to the Tokyo Auto Salon from a number of different tuning firms. Our other favorite would have to be the GRMN GT86 Concept, seen above.

Nissan GT-R Nismo N Attack Package

Nissan GT-R NISMO N Attack Package

Much like Toyota, Nissan brought multiple NISMO-tuned models to the Tokyo Auto Salon, but none more eye-catching than the Nissan GT-R NISMO N Attack Package. This is the exact same car that achieved a record lap time for volume production cars of 7 minutes and 8.679 seconds on the Nürburgring last year.

NISMO showcased two versions of the GT-R kit; the N Attack Package A – an identical model to the Nurburgring record-setter – and the N Attack Package B – which is toned down a bit for daily driving.

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2015 Honda Vezel

2015 Honda Vezel

Since we’ve already showcased multiple Nissan GT-R and Toyota GT86 Japanese car auction finds (even a Toyota Mark X), we thought today would be a good time to showcase the new Honda Vezel crossover. What you see here is a brand-new 2015MY with near zero miles on the odometer.

2015 Honda Vezel interior

The Vezel has been a huge hit in Japan, and for good reason. It’s a reliable Honda with above-average styling for the stereotypically plain-looking automaker. The Vezel is well-primed to take the place of the CR-V as Honda drivers’ go-to crossover, and you’ll find several models in various colors up for auction in Japan. When  you log into our Integrity Exports database, all you have to do is select Honda as the manufacturer and Vezel as the model, and within seconds you’ll have a list of over 20 models (at time of writing) to choose from.

For more information about this particular model, keep reading below the auction sheet for a translation of this car’s specs.

“Grade S, interior A, first registered January 2015, Hybrid Z Navi S Package, original alloy wheels, power steering, power windows, airbags, cruise control, smart key, rear view reversing camera, AT, AC, service book, spare key, hole where stereo has been removed, marks as per map”

Subaru Levorg S Concept & Legacy B4 Blitzen Shown in Tokyo

Posted by Stephen On Friday, January 16th, 2015

The 2015 Detroit Motor Show isn’t the only newsworthy events going on this week. For many automakers, the Tokyo Auto Salon is just as important. As it happens, Subaru is one of those automakers; they don’t have anything to show in Detroit, but they do have two brand-new concepts on stage in Tokyo.

Subaru Levorg S Concept

Subaru Levorg S Concept

Subaru showed us a new Levorg ‘Concept’ at the Tokyo Motor Show late last year, which is a sporty station wagon that Subaru fans everywhere have been requesting for years. We say ‘concept’ in quotes because, while it was officially dubbed a concept, it was and is really a production-ready vehicle. In fact, Subaru has already started taking orders for their new model, which are set to ship in May or June of this year.

While the Levorg has already garnered a heap of praise for its sporty throwback appeal to the good ol’ days of Subie, the Japanese automaker is bringing things up a notch at the Tokyo Auto Salon with the new Levorg S Concept. This can basically be seen as a Levorg STI model, even though Subaru isn’t officially calling it an STI. However, the STI badging that can clearly be seen on the car itself and the booth around it, and it bears the blue and orange color-scheme typical of other STI models.

In addition, Subaru has completely overhauled the front fascia with extra-large air vents, a carbon fiber front spoiler, a new tightknit mesh grille and carbon fiber side-mirror caps for an extra bit of flair. You’ll also find new sculpted side skirts, and a matching carbon fiber rear diffuser with a carbon fiber roof and rear roof spoiler, along with two extra-large exhaust pipes for good measure. The exterior design is capped off with a set of 19-inch BBS alloys with Michelin’s PSS tires.

As you’d expect with any STI, a number of performance enhancements have been made to match the sportier design. From what we know right now, those include a new STI-tuned suspension, a six-speed sports manual transmission with AWD, and a tuned-up 2.0L boxer turbo to seal the deal, although specific performance specs haven’t been released.

The performance feel continues inside with new Alcantara and leather bucket seats, aluminum pedals, a partially Alcantara wrapped steering wheel, and a bright red push-button ignition to match the STI color scheme inside.

Unfortunately, no word on when the Levorg STI will make it to production, although it does seem very likely that it eventually will. There’s a chance it’ll start shipping with the normal Levorg this summer, but our bet is that we’ll see it later this year as a 2016MY.

Subaru Legacy B4 Blitzen Concept

Subaru Legacy Blitzen Concept

Unlike the Levorg S Concept, the revised Legacy Blitzen doesn’t seem to have any ties to the STI sub-brand. Instead, it’s simply a sportier version of the admittedly rather plain-looking Subaru Legacy sedan. However, like the Levorg S, this new Legacy gets a host of exterior modifications, predominantly in the front and rear bumpers.

Subaru Legacy B4 Blitzen Study

Noteworthy additions include a new front lip spoiler, a glossy black grille, an eye-catching “Premium Red” paintjob, a new split rear spoiler, low-riding side skirts, and plenty of carbon fiber trim to go around. Plus, you’ll notice new 19-inch alloys with Bridgestone tires.

Subaru Legacy B4 Blitzen Interior

Inside, the upgrades continue with a totally overhauled interior that bears a striking resemblance to the Levorg S’ interior, albeit in a tamer black-and-beige color-scheme. The only thing missing are the Levorg’s new bucket seats, but they won’t be missed with the quilted leather and Alcantara seats in the Legacy.

Subaru XV Sport Concept

It should be noted that Subaru also showed a similarly revised version of the XV Crosstrek called the Subaru XV Sport Concept, pictured above, but you can see that the revisions are largely the same as those for the Legacy B4 Blitzen, albeit in yellow instead of red. Front lip spoiler, matte black roof, rear spoiler, rich black alloys and a sporty interior (below)… You get the idea.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Final Concept Revealed

Posted by Stephen On Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Concept

We’ve known for a while that the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution sports car doesn’t have much time left on the market. Then, a month ago things got a lot more real when Mitsubishi US’ executive VP, Don Swearingen, told automotive blog Motor Trend in plain English that there will be no replacement for the model after the 2015MY. “It’s time has come and gone,” are the exact words he used.

However, just as we’d expect for a car like the Lancer Evo, the Japanese automaker is determined to see the Lancer Evolution go out in style. So, to commemorate its final year on the market, Mitsubishi is going to release a special edition model for enthusiasts and fans alike as a way of bidding adieu. Today we got our first glimpse of the special edition model, fittingly called the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Concept (shown above), which will take a bow at the upcoming 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon later this week.

Not to be confused with the Tokyo Motor Show which we just wrapped up last November, the Tokyo Auto Salon is an aftermarket tuning show – similar to the USA’s SEMA show – which is the perfect place to showcase a tuned up Final Evo with a fancy bodykit like the one we see here.

Along with the image preview, Mitsubishi gave us a few interesting specs to chew on while we wait for the Evo X Final Concept to hit the floor later this week. Basically, it’ll be a Lancer Evolution GSR model with a specially tuned five-speed standard transmission and a custom version of the HKS-tuned four-cylinder 2.0L turbocharged engine. Automotive blog Motor Authority tells us to expect an astronomical 473 hp – increasing the standard Evo’s power output by almost 70%.

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage G

2013 Mitsubishi Mirage G

Unfortunately, there are no Mitsubishi Lancer Evo models up for auction in Japan at the time of this writing. However, there are plenty of other stellar Mitsubishis to choose from – our personal favorite of which is the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback (formerly known as the Mitsubishi Colt).

This find is a 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage G with a pristine Pearl White paint job. Of course, this little hatchback won’t give you the same jaw-clenching performance of Mitsubishi’s upcoming Evo X Final Concept, but if you’re looking for a stable and reliable hatchback with all of the conventional amenities, then this is the perfect auction find for you.

2013 Mitsubishi Mirage G interior

You’ll enjoy a fully automatic transmission, air conditioning and electric windows, and a fuel-sipping 1.0L engine paired with the lowest drag coefficient of any model in its class. Keep reading below the auction sheet to get a full translation of this great little Japanese car auction find:

2013 Mitsubishi Mirage G auction sheet

Mazda Shows Off Seven Aftermarket Models Before Tokyo Salon

Posted by Stephen On Sunday, December 21st, 2014

2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata Track Edition

We’ve had a lot of teasers come in over the past few weeks for the 2015 Detroit Motor Show, which is just a few weeks away in early January. However, on the other side of the world will be a not-quite-as-hyped automotive event of a slightly different nature. It’s the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon – different from the Tokyo Motor Show – where automakers will show off aftermarket tuned versions of their normal lineup. Today, Mazda has given us a preview of seven tuned-up cars they’ll show off next month.

For starters, Mazda plans to show off the recently announced track addition of the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata (top). This is the car that goes hand-in-hand with last month’s announcement of a new Global Cup that Mazda will begin hosting next year at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. Mazda hadn’t given us any tech. specs with the initial announcement, so we hope they’ll enlighten us when the car breaks ground next month in Tokyo.

Tuned 2015 Mazda CX-3

Equally as exciting is the tuned up version of the new Mazda CX-3, seen above. You’ll notice that the aftermarket CX-3 rides a little bit lower than the all-new model we saw last month in Los Angeles. As for the kit itself, Mazda has added some really slick black rims, and a rather NISMO-looking bodykit if we do say so ourselves.

Tuned 2015 Mazda Demio Racing Concept

That NISMO-inspired theme continues with the Demio Racing Concept (aka. the Mazda2, above-top) and the hatchback version of the Mazda3 (aka. the Mazda Axela, not shown). Both cars get the minimalistic black, white and red treatment with new sideskirts and spoilers. Just imagine a slightly longer version of the Demio shown here, and that’s exactly what the Mazda3 hatch looks like.

Aftermarket 2015 Mazda 3 Axela Sedan

Things take a more vibrant direction with the sedan version of the Mazda3, shown above. The alloy rims fitted to the aftermarket Axela sedan are much more rugged, and the overall design is stouter than that of the hatchback. It feels somehow fuller, especially with the decals Mazda’s added along the side of the car… Black accents running just above the sideskirts, and a subtler gray streak that perfectly accents the feline body lines of the extra sporty 3.

Tuned 2015 Mazda Atenza

However, that extra sporty, track-ready theme isn’t the only look Mazda will go for at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon. The 2015 Mazda Atenza, what we know as the Mazda6, was previewed for us above with a classier and more refined body kit. The exterior is a pearlescent onyx black with sleek and chrome accents, with thin twin-spoke black alloys that blend perfectly into the body.

Tuned 2015 Mazda CX-5

The 2015 Mazda CX-5, which was already getting the refresh treatment for the new year, is also shown for us in that premium-feeling onyx black. What we particularly like about the SUV kit is the grille – notice in the image above how the lines are slightly thicker and more spread out than in any of the other models. That’s a design trick that’s very fitting for the larger car’s figure, and the new alloy rims showcase a similar design style.

2015 Mazda Tokyo Auto Salon

Of course, it’s perfectly possible that Mazda will bring three aftermarket versions of each of the seven models to the Tokyo Salon – one for each fo the color-schemes shown here. One of the preview images, seen above, shows the Demio Racing Concept in all three colors, so if we’re lucky, we’ll see 21 actual Mazdas on stage when doors open next month.
