Japanese Car Auction Find – 1998 Mazda Miata (NB)

Earlier this week, we looked at a compilation of first-drive reviews for the all-new fourth-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Critical opinions ranged from “It’s better in every way,” to, “the car’s only competitor is the death of fun.”

Today, we thought it would be fun to look back at one of the older Miata models from decades past – a 1998 Mazda Miata NB.

This would’ve been the first model year in the second-generation of Mazda’s iconic roadster. We love the fact that the auction find here is in the classic forest green… This is the color most closely associated with the second-generation Miata, production code NB. Although the new Miata is designed as in homage to the original first-generation model, in our opinion its looks are closest to that of these second-gen models… If nothing else because the new Miata lacks the first-gen’s hallmark retractable headlights.

Mazda made a surprising number of updates for the second-generation Miata, even if the most noticeable is the change in headlights due to safety regulations. For example, the Miata NB featured superior aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.36. This didn’t actually result in much of a performance increase though since the new Miata gained about 150 lbs and kept the same 1.8L turbocharged engine that Mazda added as an option to the Miata in ‘94.

However, that doesn’t mean that the mechanics weren’t without improvements…

For example, this would’ve been the first car to use Mazda’s original Variable Intake Control System. The engine was also slightly tuned up to output 140 horsepower instead of 131. The engine also featured a higher compression ratio, and several of the parts were changed out for superior alternatives. Mazda also fitted the NB Miata with new wheels, better tires and bigger brakes, including the addition of anti-lock brakes.

Even though it was relatively small, all of these mechanical upgrades DID have a real-world, on-the-road impact for this generation’s performance… The new NB raced from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.8 seconds, more than a half-second faster than the NA. It also has a fully unlocked top speed of 130 mph, unlike the first-gen Eunos models in Japan and Europe which were artificially capped at 112 mph.

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser

A few days ago we got our first peek at what the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser may end up looking like. After reading some of the feedback from our own readers and others around the web, it turns out that not many folks like the new look that they’re seeing in the facelifted Land Cruiser. Personally, we’d be more excited if Toyota gave some love to their retro off-roader, the FJ Cruiser. Here’s a 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser for reference:

The current FJ Cruiser has been on the market for almost 10 years now with only one minor update for the 2011 model year. But, it still stands out as one of the most eye-catching cars on the road (and off the road, as the case may be). It would make perfect sense for Toyota to upgrade the FJ Cruiser, since they just recently came out with a new version of their Hilux pickup, whose platform the FJ Cruiser is built on.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is rugged and retro, and this 2013 model year is no exception. You can see that this car looks to have received some aftermarket treatment… The tires are Mud Grippers Extreme Terrain truck tires, and the grille and rear tire cover both look to have received some extra chrome. Beyond that, you’ll have to get more details via the auction sheet translation at the bottom of this post.

Under the hood, this Toyota FJ Cruiser runs on a 4.0L V6 engine paired up with a six speed automatic transmission and AWD. The engine outputs 260 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. The car boasts almost 10 inches of ground clearance, which is enough to make it a true off-road vehicle. For those of you familiar with off-road lingo, you can get a steep 34-degree approach and 30-degree departure with that ground clearance, and the SUV is capable of driving in up to 28 inches of water and can tow a full 5,000 lbs.

Inside, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a tad sparse (you could call it utilitarian), but it still keeps the same retro styling as the exterior. The quirky colorful nature of the FJ Cruiser is maintained in the cabin with color inserts such as the bright orange one you can see in the image above.

I probably don’t need to tell you that this 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Japanese car auction find is in above-average condition. It’s got an overall rating of 4.5 with a B-grade interior… So about what you’d expect from a 2013MY. For more information, keep reading below the auction sheet.

What?! Here’s Why the 2016 Mazda2 Won’t Be Sold in the US

Get this – the new Mazda2 subcompact that’s gotten so much attention this past year will NOT be sold in the US in 2016. Even though Mazda is manufacturing the new Mazda2 just south of the border in their brand-new factory in Salamanca, Mexico, top US executives apparently “decided it wasn’t a priority,” at least according to an interview between Robert Davis, Senior VP of US Operations, and Automotive News.

Here’s why: it turns out that a Mazda doesn’t have the production capacity in their new plant to make enough Mazda2 hatchbacks for every single market. So, last year when the global office was allocating units of their new subcompact, executives from the US politely bowed out of the conversation. Davis says, “We could have had it, but we would have had a number that didn’t make much sense with 600 dealers and with the marketing it takes to launch a new car.”

In other words, Mazda US would’ve had to either A) only send Mazda2s to a select few of their dealerships, which doesn’t make sense, or B) go through the trouble of marketing a new car on a national level only to have a small number of models available per dealership, which also doesn’t make sense. Plus, Mazda only sold 13.5k units of the 2014 Mazda2 last year, which may be a 14% increase year-over-year, but not enough to make it worth the trouble, especially when Americans are trending towards crossovers.

“I wanted to allocate resources to those products that make us and our dealers considerably more profit than a Mazda2 does,” Davis said. “It’ll always be there if we need it.” Apparently, Davis doesn’t see the US branch of the brand needing a fuel-sipping subcompact anytime soon when the crossover segment is exploding and gas prices remain low.

Fortunately, the awesome new Mazda2 will still make it into the US, but not under the Mazda name. Remember the partnership between Mazda and Toyota? Well, Toyota will adopt the subcompact into their lineup as the new Scion iA sedan for the 2016 model year, which is built on the same platform and manufactured at the same Salamanca plant as the Mazda2.

Although you won’t be able to buy the 2016 Mazda2 through any US dealerships, if past trends are any indication, the new car will do just fine in Japan. Anytime you have an extremely popular car, it always finds its way into auction houses, so come back this time next year and you’ll probably be able to get a near-new Mazda2 of your very own.

In the meantime, this 2014MY is in excellent shape with an overall auction rating of 5, and a near immaculate exterior. This would’ve been the last year that the old pre-SkyActiv Mazda2 was available, but it was still a perfectly good car. Edmunds said the 2014MY was a good buy for its surprisingly sporty handling and simple-to-operate controls, plus an affordable price-tag (made even more so by being up for auction).

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2013 Audi TT

We’ve been talking a lot entry-level sports coupes recently here on Integrity Exports, primarily the recently facelifted Toyota GT86 and Scion FR-S. So, it seemed fitting today for us to do an auction find focused on one of the most popular sports coupes on the road – the Audi TT.

Part coupe, part hot hatch, the Audi TT is impossible to ignore. This particular auction find is a 2013 Audi TT 1.8 TFSI, the base model for the TT lineup. But, don’t let its position in the trim line fool you – AutoExpress says the 1.8 TFSI is “the best TT in the range.” It’s starting price is the same as the Toyota GT 86 in most markets, and it gives you an arguably more premium sports car experience.

Starting outside, the TT has a distinct design among other coupes. It almost resembles a hatchback with its bulbous rear-end and all-around curvy aesthetic. Audi designed the fourth-gen TT specifically with the shooting-brake body style in mind, and we’d say they succeeded in applying the silhouette to the coupe form. This model is in a classic piano black with chrome accents around the grille.

Under the hood, the 1.8 TFSI name tells you that this TT runs on a four-cylinder 1.8L EA888 Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection engine (which tells you where the ‘TFSI’ comes from). The car outputs a solid 160 horsepower which can propel the TT from 0 to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds. Fuel economy is 30 mpg, which makes this one of the cleanest non-hybrid coupes under $50K.

The interior is where this 2013 Audi TT really shines. Audi has used nothing but premium materials inside the cabin, and the overall layout is spacious and comfortable thanks to the higher-than-normal roofline. The styling is exactly what you’d expect from a European sports car – minimalist and classy. It has a simple dashboard with a stunning color LCD nav system just below the air vents, positioned at the same level as the steering wheel for easy reach.

Speaking of, even the baseline 1.8 TFSI TT comes with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and paddle shifters for the six-speed automatic transmission, as you can see in the image above. The rear seats can be folded down for additional trunk space, which is probably how they’ll be used for 9 out of 10 TT drivers.

According to KBB’s review of the 2013 Audi TT, you’ll like this car because of it offers a “fine balance of performance and style – especially style. If it catches your eye, there’s really nothing else quite like it.”

Sixth-Generation Chevrolet Camaro Finally Unveiled

Okay, we know it’s not every day that we cover non-Japanese cars here on the Integrity Exports blog. But, this is a special occasion. After several months of buildup, Chevy has finally unveiled the all-new sixth-generation Camaro which will go on sale in the US by the end of the year, and everywhere else in Q1 of ’16.

First things first, you can see that Chevrolet has kept the classic Camaro image of the last few model years almost fully intact. The new car still looks very much like the Camaro you’d see on dealership floors today. However, Chevrolet has logged a solid 350 hours of windtunnel tweaking to hone the old Camaro into a sleeker, more aerodynamic machine.

Also, even though you wouldn’t be able to tell from the design, Chevy managed to trim a full 200 lbs. off the Camaro, which makes it noticeably more agile AND improves fuel economy up to 30mpg. They did that by making the car a tiny bit shorter and narrower, and it also rides a bit lower to the ground.  And you can’t see it, but the underpinnings are reportedly 28% more rigid too.

Mark Reuss, GM’s executive VP of product development, expanded on the car’s design by saying, “For Camaro enthusiasts, it retains the iconic design cues and offers even more performance.”

What exactly does he mean by ‘more performance’?

Looking to stay competitive with the Camaro’s arch nemesis – the Ford Mustang – Chevrolet will offer three different engines in 2016 and onward. First, the baseline trim will ship with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine (pictured right) with 275 horsepower. Then, the mid-range model will come with a 3.6L V6 outputting 335 horses (pictured middle). The top-of-the-line Camaro SS gets an updated version of the Corvette Stingray’s LT1 V8 – 6.2L of raw combustion power that outputs a blistering 455 hp.

The SS also gets some big ol’ Brembo brakes. All plants come with driver’s choice of a six-speed manual with a Magnetic Ride Control system to help match rev speed during downshifting, or with an eight-speed Hydra-matic automatic transmission (complete with paddle shifters).

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2002 Chevrolet Camaro

It’s not every day that you’ll find a decent Chevrolet Camaro up for auction in Japan, but today is our lucky day. What we have here is a 2002 model that’s in surprisingly good shape. This is probably one of the most nostalgic sports cars that you will still occasionally see on the road, which speaks well of the older Camaro’s longevity.

As a 2002MY, this Camaro would’ve been the last model in the fourth-generation before Chevy halted production of their sport coupe between 2002 and 2010, making this an extra special model.

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2006 Toyota Hilux Surf

Yesterday we got our first unofficial peak at the eighth-generation Toyota Hilux pickup truck which is set to go on sale sometime in the next few months. Although the Hilux pickup hasn’t been available in Japan for quite some time, the Hilux Surf SUV was sold there from 2002 to 2009. Today we’re looking at a 2006 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X Limited model.

Just to set the record straight, the Toyota Hilux Surf is basically the Japanese version of the Toyota 4Runner. The only difference is that the Hilux Surf has a side-opening tailgate whereas the 4Runner’s tailgate lifts up from the bottom (at least it did in this generation of production). Otherwise, both cars run on the same double wishbone front suspension and solid rear axle for extra durability. This is in stark contrast to the Toyota Highlander – a similar size crossover that isn’t really intended for off-road use. The Hilux Surf is certainly off-road friendly.

It’s also worth noting that as a Limited model, this Hilux Surf would have come with Toyota’s new suspension technology that debuted in this generation – the X-Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) – which dramatically reduces body roll during intense cornering.

Under the hood, the auction sheet shown at the bottom of this post tells us that this Hilux Surf is powered by a 2.7L engine. After digging around for some JDM manufacturer specs, we found that this particular engine offers 160 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. Not too shabby, although it should be noted that other Hilux Surf models have engines up to 4.0L in displacement if you want more ‘oomph’.

Inside, the Hilux Surf has decent cabin amenities like automatic climate control, remote keyless entry and a color DVD-based infotainment/navigation system paired up with a 10-speaker JBL sound system. However, what really sets it apart is the sheer space offered in the cabin. Looking at the pictures from the auction find, you can see the driver here has enough room to almost fully recline in the front seat! And you’ll sit extremely comfortably thanks to power driver’s lumbar support and a tilting telescopic steering wheel.

On the whole, this is a great Japanese car auction find with an overall rating of 4. The gleaming chrome alloys that you can easily make out in the pictures above are definitely our favorite part. Just like the 4Runner, the Hilux Surf is widely regarded as an easy-to-drive SUV that does exactly what it says on the box. It’s the perfect mix of reliability, comfort and utility. Japanese Car Auction Find – 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo GSR

Yesterday we got the great news that Mitsubishi has definite plans to revive the Evo nameplate. They didn’t say when, but high-level execs have all but guaranteed that the next Evo will be a high-performance hybrid crossover. That means it’s the end of an era for Mitsubishi’s budget-friendly sports sedan. Today we’re paying homage to the old Evo with a pristine auction find from just a few years back – a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo GSR Premium package.

As a 2010 model year, this Mitsubishi Lancer Evo would have been manufactured in the prime of the car’s 10th generation of production. Otherwise known as the Lancer Evolution X, these models were built on a newly designed lightweight 2.0L turbocharged inline-four GEMA engine. The engine is made entirely from aluminum, but still offers a great kick with 296 horsepower available under the hood. With the lightweight design, this Lancer Evo is one of the few sub-300 hp cars that can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

As an Evo with the GSR Premium package, this Lancer’s engine would’ve been mated to a 6-speed Twin Clutch SST transmission system with magnesium paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel. This car also would’ve been the first car to use Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, with stopping power provided by Brembo ventilated brake discs.

The exterior is iconic – exactly what most people associate with the Lancer Evo name. It’s got that wide-open trapezoidal maw, a trio of hood vents, a blood red paintjob and a huge rear spoiler to define this car as a performance model. And those stylish treads you see in the pictures above are 245/40R18 Yokohama ADCAN A13C tires mounted with Enkie 12-spoke alloys with extra-high rigidity.

Moving inside the car, this 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo has a surprisingly robust interior for being manufactured during the automotive recession. In the image here, it’s easy to make out the sculpted leather bucket seats with white stitching and the chrome accents around the cabin that match the magnesium paddle shifters. You also can’t miss that beautiful 7-inch LCD with built-in navigation through the Mitsubishi Motors Communication System (MMCS) and a sizeable 30Gb on-board hard drive. And you can rock out with a booming Rockford Fosgate audio system for your favorite tunes.

At the time of this writing, there are less than 10 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions up for auction in Japan. The one you see here is the best-looking one of the bunch with an overall rating of 4.5. Japanese Car Auction Find – 2010 Subaru WRX STI A-Line

After we learned that Subaru finally plans to bring a full-on BRZ STI model to the US, it seems fitting to highlight a Japanese car auction find from the Subaru tuning arm. Despite being the only STI model shared between Japan and the US, we went with a Subaru WRX STI because frankly it’s the most exciting STI variant that’s been offered to date. This is a 2010 Subaru WRX STI A-Line Premium package.

The Subaru WRX STI A-Line was introduced in Japan back in 2009 as a 2010 model year. It was essentially a sedan variant of the Impreza WRX STI… If you look at the two cars only from the front, they are nearly identical. However, the A-Line gets a number of additional improvements that help aim it at a slightly older demographic. The A-Line was, after all, meant to be an adult-targeted model.

Looking at the exterior, the Subaru WRX STI A-Line has all the trappings of a performance car. To help emphasize the A-Line’s sedan profile, Subaru pulled the rear overhang back by about 150mm, which adds a meager 10kg to the curb weight. You’ll also find a slight front spoiler, a hood scoop for extra powertrain ventilation, 18-inch forged aluminum alloys, and a rear diffuser with twin sports exhausts. And of course, you can make out the STI badging in the front and back.

Inside, the normal Subaru WRX STI A-Line comes standard with Recaro bucket seats wrapped in black leather and Alcantara. However, since this is an A-Line Premium package, you’ll get tan leather instead of the Alcantara mixture, and you’ll get tan leather wrapped around the steering wheel too.

You’ll also enjoy heated seats, cruise control, paddle shifters (which you can barely make out in the photo) and the central audio remote control. And don’t forget the aluminum pedals and built-in navigation that come standard in any WRX STI.

Under the hood, the 2010 WRX STI A-Line was only offered with a five-speed automatic transmission with downshift control. This is where the WRX STI A-Line really separates itself from the normal WRX – it runs on a twin turbocharged 2.5L boxer four that outputs a hefty 300 hp.

What’s more?

The engine is equipped with an Active Valve Control System to maximize low-mid range torque, and a Tumble Generation Valve that helps optimize combustion. Plus, you’ll have insane stopping control with 17-inch front brake discs and 16-inch rear rotors.

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2010 BMW X6

Last week we learned that the Honda Crosstour will be officially dropped from the Honda lineup. Meanwhile, the BMW X6 – a very similar car by all rights – continues to sell very well. In fact, the second-generation 2015 BMW X6 received an 8/10 rating by US News just earlier this week. As a 2010 model year, today’s Japanese car auction find falls inside the car’s first generation of production, but it still has all the same features that make today’s model such a hot seller.

Looking at the auction sheet, you can see that this is a standard BMW X6 xDrive35i. That means that this wagon-sedan-crossover fusion is powered by a 3.0L twin-turbocharged inline-six petrol engine. Power output is 302 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, so it actually offers a very engaging and responsive driving experience. With numbers like that, it’s no surprise that even the most scrutinizing critics rated the BMW X6 as having the best performance in its class. US News actually said that, “even base trims of the X6 provided a superb drive.

The X6’s responsiveness is maximized by BMW’s Dynamic Performance Control system. The X6 is the first car to use BMW’s DPC system, which basically uses an active differential to distribute different levels of torque to the wheels depending on driving conditions. While you’d have a hard time narrowing the BMW X6 into a specific segment, what really separates it from the Honda Crosstour is that it does have a distinct and appealing design. Of course, this is no surprise from BMW, but we really do adore the X6’s aesthetic. It has an almost coupe-like profile with a rounded rear end and a heavy front clip, along with a relatively low ride and a stunning BMW-style mesh grille. As you can see in the images and on the auction sheet below, this particular Japanese car auction find is in pretty good shape for its age, with only a few minor dings and scratches.

Surprisingly, the interior of the 2010 BMW X6 is one of the only areas to draw criticism. The cabin is well-equipped and comfortable, but some drivers bemoan the fact that the car only has four seats… Not exactly what you’d expect from a vehicle that’s commonly described as an SUV. However, the truth is that the X6 offers a lot more interior space and cargo capacity than just about any sedan on the market, and rivals that of many small crossovers. So, it really just depends what you’re comparing it to.

Either way, it’s easy to see why the BMW X6 continues to thrive in BMWs lineup. It stacks up well to the competition, it looks great, and the performance is even better. For more information, get a full translation of the auction sheet below:

2016 Lexus ES Teased Before Auto Shanghai 2015

Last week our first teasers for the upcoming Auto Shanghai 2015 started rolling in. Our first teaser was for the new Nissan Lannia – a car developed exclusively for the Chinese market. Today’s teaser has a bit more international appeal… It’s a teaser for the new 2016 Lexus ES, which is scheduled to get a mid-generational facelift for the 2016 model year. Just to give you a little background, the current Lexus ES is a full-size luxury sedan that’s about three years into its sixth generation of production. It’s one of Lexus’ most important cars in their lineup, and we’re sure it’s one of their hot sellers in the Chinese market. After all, the mid- and full-size sedan segments seem to be where it’s at for the Chinese business class… The Lexus ES is the perfect fit for that trend.

Lexus didn’t give us much to go on along with the teaser. In fact, they gave us literally three sentences’ worth of information, all of which you can find below:

“The Lexus ES established a unique and important position in the luxury sedan segment with its elegant styling, extraordinary quality, and Lexus’ best-in-class service when it was introduced in 1989. More than 1.7 million units have been sold globally over the past 25 years.

The new Lexus ES maintains its classical elegance while conveying a more dynamic experience and luxurious craftsmanship.”

Looking more closely at the teaser image, we can see a number of distinguishing design features for the 2016 Lexus ES facelift. First and foremost, we can see that the headlights have been restyled, most notably with that extra-prominent swoosh LED sitting below the fixtures.

We can also see that the pinched grille gets a thicker-looking chrome outline, and that it probably takes up a bigger chunk of the front clip as a whole. In fact, if you look closely, it seems that the horizontal bars that sit behind the Lexus logo on the grille will now extend all the way down the fender instead of stopping halfway down as they do in the 2015MY (which you can see above). That should serve to open up the design and present a much more aggressive, but fluid face for Lexus’ premiere midsize sedan.

Japanese Car Auction Find – 2014 Lexus RX

Unfortunately, there are no Lexus ES sedans up for auction in Japan at the time of this writing. However, this gives us an excellent opportunity to find a model that Lexus recently showcased in New York – the Lexus RX.

This is a 2014 Lexus RX, and as you can see it’s in excellent condition. Like the 2016 model year shown in New York, it has a crisp and clean design, however the 2014MY looks a little less edgy and angular than its facelifted successor. That’s a good thing for some drivers!

Of course, the real appeal for any luxury crossover is almost always going to be the interior, and the same holds true here. Leather seats… Plenty of space… A bright and vivid navigation display… What’s not to like?
