Toyota FT-1 Confirmed as Next-Gen Supra

Toyota has reportedly confirmed that the FT-1 will become the next-generation Supra.

The stunning concept took this year’s Detroit Auto Show by storm, and almost to the moment that it was unveiled, rumors started stirring that it would be the next-generation Supra. Now those rumors can come to a rest as it has been confirmed that the FT-1 will be produced as the next great sports car by the Japanese automaker.

But that’s not all, as an entry-level coupe is rumored to also be in the works that will be slotted under the Scion FR-S and will be priced at around $16,000. The entry-level sports car’s development is rumored to be headed by Tetsuya Tada, the GT86’s chief engineer. Sources say that both next-generation coupes will form the base for a whole range of sports cars that will start joining Toyota’s lineup starting in 2016. As for what will be under the hood of the entry-level coupe, Toyota is exploring a 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain and is hoping for a 2017 debut.

Too bad it wont look anything like that when it released. The big side scoops, lower front openings, floating headlights, bulbous nose, clear hood, big wing, fancy mirrors, and great wheel fitment will all be gone by production. I am looking forward to the other car though! Please, just no freaking hybrids!

  • Jeff

It sounded super exciting right up to the point where it said 1.5L hybrid. Yeach, no thanks!

  • BlueBomberTurbo

Depends on how powerful the hybrid motor is. Remember, they provide 100% power at any equivalent engine RPM. A high revving 1.5 paired with a decently powerful electric engine could be the best of both worlds.

  • kr_metal

Why not? Hybrids can be good performers. The Prius was meant for max fuel economy, this isn’t.

  • nobody

That 1.5L hybrid is referring to what may be put in the entry level coupe below the GT86, not the future Supra.

  • nick

i hope they dont keep that transparent thing on the hood looks too generic

  • Gorhob Perkins

I’m sure they’ll tone it down, but I trust them to keep the best parts.

    Read the article again

  • Lolrax

Yeah, like every car has that

  • Mark

So, *who* exactly at Toyota confirmed this? Without an on-the-record quote from a relevant authority at Toyota, I’m going to take this with a grain of salt.

  • Dan

They retired the name in like 2007. So no, it’s not.

  • Bill

For these new cars to not completely suck they need to have manual transmission’s and no useless stupid hybrid garbage. Otherwise they will be ruined, just as the motor ruins the frs.

  • CP

retired the name? sorry, many companies have ‘retired’ names only to bring them back later… Challenger? Caprice? Dart? there are many many more.

  • Ivan P Brazdaluz

Finally!!! I hope they put a inline 6 turbo. With hybrid motors running the front wheels. This partnership with BMW should help that.

  • Cory Ray

Anyone else notice the cross-drilled brake rotors on the concept car?

Also, who’s to say these will be monospec like Scions? They will most likely have six-cylinder engines but there will probably be both NA and turbo versions. Ie: 2JZ-GE (~200HP) and 2JZ-GTE (276-310HP) found in the MkIVs.

  • Hybrids

    I agree:
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a mid-engined sports plug-in hybrid designed by Porsche and first shown as a concept at the 80th Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. The Spyder is powered by a 4.6 litre V8 engine, developing 608 horsepower (453 kW), with two electric motors delivering an additional 279 horsepower (208 kW) for a combined output of 887 horsepower (661 kW).

I read this article and got confused right away! This article has a heading about the Toyota FT-1 Concept but the article spends most of the wordage about an entry level $16K car below that of the FR-S. There is only two sentences about the Toyota FT-1 Concept and it was generalized. The more details are concerning the entry level 2016 vehicle.

  • Taq Coe

Is the head lightd led and they should fit a 3 litre twin turbo

  • James Carruthers

By manual do you mean via gear-stick? Paddle shifters are way better.

On the matter of hybrids, electric motors give way better torque and acceleration than ICEs.
