Japan Car Auction Finds: Porsche 911 Speedster (1995)

A modern (now also aging) retake on the classic 356 Speedster, the 911 Speedster was produced in limited numbers between 1989 and 1994. This one at auction yesterday was one of the final examples built.

I remember this model being controversial at the time it came out. Basically a 911 Cabriolet with a chopped windscreen and a fancy tonneau cover but little else to recommend it — except its very limited production run.

And so although this one only has 37,260KM (23,152 miles) on the clock, this kind of low mileage is not so rare for these kinds of cars. It seems that the main attraction of buying one new back then was its collectibility. So owners have always had their eyes on the future value, and as a result have left them locked up in the garage most of their lives.

Nonetheless, this was a good condition example. So perhaps due to the rarity of these cars in Japan, the final sold price was pushed up to almost 7.7 million Yen.

Despite the mixed opinions about the original 911 Speedster, in 2010 Porsche decided to produce a modern take on this 80s vehicle and ended up building 356 of these cars you can see in the video below:
