Nissan GT-R Gold Edition Pics and Next-Gen R36 News
We already knew that Nissan’s been selling a limited edition of their 2016 Nissan GTR to celebrate its 45th anniversary. Today, we get a whole bunch of awesome on-road pictures of the 45th Anniversary Edition model. Automotive eye-candy, here we come!
The limited run Anniversary Edition GT-R will be built on the Premium (base) trim of Nissan’s supercar.
Only 45 units of the gold GT-R will be built – one for each year of the car’s existence. You can have one for yourself for a meager $102,770, which is just $1,000 more than the Premium model!
As we’ve said before, there’s nothing different about the 2016 Nissan GT-R 45th Anniversary Edition other than the fact that it’s gold (technically it’s the same “Silica Brass” that was used on the 2001 Skyline R34 Type GT-R). It runs on the same 3.8L twin-turbo V6 that’s in the regular GT-R, which isn’t to say it’s an unimpressive engine… It outputs 542 horsies and 463 lb-ft of torque.
Inside, the golden theme continues with a special gold VIN plaque to serve as a constant reminder of the car’s limited production.
Next-Gen GT-R to Get LMP1 Engine
The other piece of GT-R-related news we have for you is about to the engine that may be used in the next-generation Nissan GT-R, which will be the R36. According to an interview between Ben Bowlby, who serves as the technical director for GT-R LM Nismo, and Top Gear, the 3.0L V6 engine currently being used in the GT-R LMP1 racer could be an early iteration of a road-going variant.
“The 3.0L V6 is sort of god-child of the true, road-going GT-R,” Bowlby informed. “It’s a direct injection engine, and the combustion technology, and integration of turbo and intake system within the head design, is all very interesting and highly applicable to the road.”
He went on to explain that many high-performance racing engines are too short-lived to apply to commercial vehicles; they rev high and burn out too quickly. However, the engine in the current GT-R racer revs at the same 6,500 rpm that you’d expect on an off-track car.
Either way, we’ve still got a few more years until the R36 GT-R makes its debut. Most recent rumors place it at the end of 2018 as a 2019MY, but it’s too early to lock in a firm schedule.
