Suzuki Prepares for International Comeback with 5 New Vehicles

This year, Suzuki was the first Japanese car manufacturer to officially pull out of the US market. For many, this withdrawal was taken as the beginning of the end for the underdog automaker. But, Suzuki has different plans. In fact, if anything, their withdrawal from the US has only sparked further innovation.

Earlier this week, AutoExpress published a report (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/suzuki/64463/suzuki-reveals-future-plans) saying that Suzuki intends to produce five brand-new cars over the next three years, with the first coming later this year. As you continue reading, you’ll get a brief overview of each new vehicle coming from Suzuki.

Car 1. Upgraded Five-Door Swift Sport

First up, Suzuki tells us to expect a new version of their popular Swift Sport hatchback, but this time with five doors and all-wheel-drive. This update will add two new versions of the Swift Sport – the basic model, which looks very similar to the current Suzuki Swift, and a second more stylized version that will apparently compete with the Fiat Panda 4×4.

Car 2. City Car Replacing the Splash & Alto

Next up, about halfway through 2014 you can expect a Swift-inspired replacement for the Suzuki Splash and Alto. This will be the type of car that typically does very well in developing markets, and as such it is to be manufactured in Thailand. This new city car will apparently offer incredible fuel-efficiency with a three-cylinder petrol engine that operates with the lowest CO2 emissions in class.

Car 3. Small SUV to Rival the Nissan Juke

This is probably the most exciting new car, but also the one that we know very little about. All we know is that this new SUV will rival the Nissan Juke and similar B-segment vehicles, and that it will basically be a shortened version of the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross.

Car 4. Production Version of G70 Concept

We first saw the Suzuki G70 Concept at the 2011 Tokyo motor show where it was badged as the REGINA Concept. This car has been in the works for a while, and it’s now very likely that it’ll finally see production sometime in 2015. One interesting development we know is that the G70 will likely borrow Fiat’s TwinAir turbocharged two-cylinder petrol engine.

Car 5. Swift-Inspired MPV

Last but not least, Suzuki tells us that they plan to unleash a new small MPV in early 2016 that is, once again, inspired by the Swift. Basically, Suzuki aims to offer an MPV with the same driving dynamics and style of the Swift, but with a bit more space for passengers.

I have to say, it’s very encouraging to hear Suzuki’s plans for the future. It’s good to know they’re not missing a beat after this US withdrawal… They’re clearly still in the driver’s seat, and it seems that we can rest assured that Suzuki is still here to stay.
