Honda Civic Type R Production Model Coming to Geneva

2014 Honda Civic Type R Concept

After many years’ worth of concepts and prototypes, Honda is finally ready to debut a production-spec version of their fourth-generation Civic Type R – dubbed “a racecar for the road”. As you continue reading, we’ll quickly review what we know about the new commercial sports car, starting with this mouthwatering audio clip Honda released to tease the Type R’s debut:

That engine you hear in the video was developed exclusively for the new Honda Civic Type R. It’s a powerful turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder i-VTEC engine that Honda tells us will output well upwards of 275 horsies, with some guesses being as high as 320 hp. It’ll be front-wheel-drive, and that powerful pound-for-pound engine will be paired with a six speed manual transmission tuned for tight, track-level performance.

For reference, this powertrain will blast the Honda Civic type R from 0 to 100 km/hr (0-62 mph) in a little over five seconds.

When Honda shows us the production model in March, it will have been exactly one year since the last new Type R concept. At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Honda Design showed us the intriguing two-door at the top of this post. Then, at the 2014 Paris Motor Show we saw a blue version of the same Type R Concept:

In addition to detailed engine specs, we’re excited to see what Honda has done with the design of this aggressive, race-ready sports car. We expect it to be slightly toned down from the concepts above, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the changes were very minimal. For example, there may be a few less LEDs, or less decals on the body (in the case of the blue version from Paris).

Either way, Honda tells us they’ll also bring their new 2015 F1 car – the McLaren MP4-30 – to Geneva. We’ll also likely see another appearance of the Acura NSX, since Geneva would be a great place for Honda to make the supercar’s European debut.

Today’s Japanese car auction find is a third-generation Civic Type R.

Even if you’re not particularly interested in buying one of these older models, it’s a great reference for where the type R we’ll see in Geneva comes from.

As you can see, there’s a definite resemblance to the Civic type R concepts we saw in 2014. Although, this older model definitely looks more like a conventional Honda Civic and less like a racecar. Either way, it’s a great auction find that you can learn more about by reading below the auction sheet for details:
