Infiniti QX30 Concept Teased Ahead of Geneva

Nissan showed us a new Maxima earlier this week, and now Infiniti is taking the spotlight with news of a new concept coming to the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month. It’s the Infiniti QX30 Concept, and this is our official teaser of the new concept’s butt:

Let’s start with the basics – this is a preview for a new premium compact crossover that will launch alongside the new Infiniti Q30 hatch when it hits dealership floors this fall. According to the press release, “the QX30 concept is the Infiniti design vision which will inspire a new premium compact crossover targeted at a new generation of premium customers.”

The release goes on to say that the, “QX30 Concept aims to reignite the premium compact segment with a distinctive approach to design that looks beyond the practicality and conformity expected of the segment.”

What’s this tell us?

It tells us that if you’re one of those old-fashioned utilitarians that demands functional space from your crossover, look somewhere else. On the other hand, if you’re a young hipster who wants the driving dynamics of a sports car with just enough room to pack up a ‘get-away weekend’ when you want one, this will be the car for you.

Looking at the styling, the rear of the QX30 looks remarkably similar to that of the Q30 Concept we saw about a year and a half ago at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (above and below).

It’s got the same heavily sculpted rear-end with a nice pair of trapezoid-shaped exhaust pipes that sit inside of the rear bumper. The trunk lid looks like it boasts a small rear spoiler, and we can see racks fit to the roof of the car. The QX30 boasts a wide, high-riding drive, and we expect that this is one of the key ways Infiniti will make the small crossover feel like an SUV behind the wheel.

To give you a bit more context for the new concept’s design, Infiniti tells us the QX30 will effectively combine “the sleek lines of a Coupe with the rugged looks and commanding seating position of a crossover … Equally at home in the city as it is on the open road.” Those with a long memory will find that statement remarkably similar to what they said about the Q30 Study back in 2013.

Unfortunately, official details are sparse. We know that the two models – the QX30 and the Q30 – will share the same platform and much of the same design. Beyond that, we’re completely in the dark. Stay tuned for March 3 to see the QX30’s official debut in Geneva.
