Mitsubishi Delica D:2 Coming March 10th in Japan
Mitsubishi today announced a new compact minivan – the Delica D:2 – scheduled to be sold across Japan from March 10th. According to the Mitsubishi press release, they are aiming at giving a wide-body experience, with sliding doors to make the most of Japan’s narrow parking spaces, while at the same time keeping it all in a compact design with a 1.2 liter engine that qualifies for Japan’s EcoCar tax-saving designation.
The D:2 is being positioned as an entry-level model below the larger and more established Delica D:5, which has a long provenance over 2 decades. The larger D:5 Delica is a descendant of the famous 4WD off-road Delica models such as the Space Gear, which are still very popular in some markets, especially Canada.
I have to say that the D:2 is not a very radical design, and without badges it would be very difficult to distinguish it from all the other economical minivans in its class. In this sense it does not have quite the same level of interest as the old Space Gears, which really were unique in their combination of genuine off-road 4×4 capability and the minivan format.
